Weekly Report 3: Musicians of the Arab World

Electrowavez is a Palestinian psychedelic trance group - a subgenre of trance music characterized by arrangements of synthetic rhythms and layered melodies created by high tempo riffs - formed by brothers, DJs, and producers Charlie Shaabi and Richard Savo in Acre, Israel in 2008.  Shaabi and Savo were despairing of the situations and wanted to do something different.  They wanted to talk about the numerous issues that Palestinians faced, so they began to sing protest songs in a group called MWR.  The interest in electronic music was because it makes people connect to one another and it separates them from the current upsetting realities; a love for foreign music and pop drove their passions.

Venturing into electronic music in 2008, their first appearance was in February 2009 with the release of "Kono Ya Habibi" - Being My Lover, in English - a remix of the Lebanese singer Fairuz.  The release made it to the #1 position on the local radio station, Arabil.  A second single, "Give Me My Freedom," was released in September 2009; this piece used a sample from the Arabic poem Oum Kalthoum- "Al Atlal."

Electrowavez's first album, "Brainstorm," was released in May 2010.  Over a two year span, eleven songs were composed and written.  "Brainstorm" combined the electro house music genre with Arabic melodies and instrumentation.  Savo collaborated with Angelina Zbedat to release the single "Sababa" in May 2010.  Peaking at the #1 on Arbil-an, an Israeli radio station, the song later appeared on the Israeli adaptation of The Bachelor, "Haravak."  Elctrowavez featuring vocalist Walid el Hilou released the single "Barcode" in September 2010; this track was a number one hit for three weeks in a row.  Zbedat returned to perform solo vocals on the single "My Life" in January 2011.

Their second album was released on July 3rd, 2013.  "Za3tar" - or "Za'atar," after a popular, beneficial Middle Eastern herb - has tracks influenced by psychedelic trance, Goa trance - often having funky drone-like basslines, a la the techno minimalism of psytrance-, and dubstep.  Due to the growing popularity of the psychedelic music scene among the Arab community in Israel, the album garnered much success.
